Student Halls Birmingham

The former ‘first manufacturing town in the world’, Birmingham is the second-largest city in the UK, with 1.1m inhabitants just in the city area. It has a rich industrial history and strong ties to Midlands Enlightenment, making it a very interesting location for students of philosophy, history and sciences. There are 5 universities in the city with a student population of nearly 80,000, so you are sure to lead a colourful academic and social life. These students typically find home in Birmingham’s large selection of private and university halls, with many opting for a flat or a house.

Most private halls are in the city centre, within the A4540 Birmingham ring-road, though a sizeable minority is located in and around the University of Birmingham campus, itself laying some 2.5m south of the city’s centre. Whichever university you choose, you will have a wide range of options from nation’s top providers. The once way too expensive city centre is now accessible to students thanks to a number of private halls operators. This is always a good choice, as both your university and all the social venues will be a stone’s throw away; the concentration of great pubs and bars is the greatest around here too, so be on the lookout for your new go-to place! City centre will be the pricier option, though, as you may suspect. Nonetheless, overall the prices in Birmingham will be relatively low, especially if you rent with one of the many private halls; private flats and houses, especially in the city centre, will be the most expensive. Harborne is a lovely, affluent suburb, perfect for students hoping for a quieter residential life further away from the hustle-and-bustle of the busy city streets; it is within cycling distance of UoB, though, so will be a fantastic option. Bournbrook, Selly Oak and Edgbaston are usually among students’ favourites, offering lower prices and fantastic access to amenities and all the important parts of student social life. These areas also benefit from good access to Birmingham’s green spaces, perfect for outdoor activities and leisure.

If you choose not to rent in a private hall, flats, houses and studios are available too, and are dotted around the whole of Birmingham. We strongly recommend renting closely to your university, to make sure you don’t need to commute. If you choose to live further away, though—as lower prices may seduce you—make sure to factor in transport costs and times—so you don’t end up commuting more than an hour for your morning lecture! Buses are the most popular option, though keep an eye out for tram and light rail services for travelling a bit further out. Birmingham is also very well connected with the rest of the country by rail and air, so you always have an option for an out-of-town weekend!

Birmingham is a large, spacious city with options so numerous it’s difficult to wrap your head around. You may be concerned with different prices, commutes, safety, and aesthetic values of the different areas. Checking up on a number of sites, comparing prices and pictures can be a nightmare. That’s why looking for your new flat with us is SO much easier—at studenthalls.co.uk we collect all the best private halls and rentals in one place, allowing you to compare prices, see high-quality pictures of the properties and apply any filters you may need. Choose easy renting, choose studenthalls.co.uk.
