Student Halls London

Laying on the ancient banks of River Thames, London, our illustrious capital, is often described as the greatest city on earth. It bears this title with pride, providing a fantastic mixture between top university education—second only to Oxbridge—and vibrant social life. Its sprawling suburbs and lively central streets are home to nearly 500,000 students who find accommodation in a wide range of university and private accommodation.

London’s 40 universities, located largely in zones 1-2 of the city typically house students for the first year of their education. This arrangement makes for a bustling student housing market. No matter which university you choose and what your budget is, you are always in a good position to find a high-quality, affordable accommodation in London, be it a private hall of residence just minutes away from campus or a beautiful period house in one of London’s many greener neighbourhoods—London is well known for its astonishingly pretty green spaces, perfect for sports, walks, or even picnics!

Should you choose a room in private hall or residence, you are likely to find yourself in the busy city centre—these halls typically cater for students of UCL, QMUL, KCL or Imperial College. In most cases you will be within walking or cycling distance from your campus—long enough to get some daily exercise, but short enough to ensure you are never late for your lectures and seminars. Often located in new, purpose-built developments, these properties benefit from beautiful surroundings, intriguing architecture, a great variety of amenities, and best transport links to other parts of London.

Rooms, flats and houses are a great choice, too. Locations, as you suspect, vary greatly; so do prices. Many students opt for sharing with a group of friends in a larger flat or a house—this allows them to benefit from lower per-tenant costs and gives much greater flexibility in choosing a property. We usually recommend settling within your university’s neighbourhood for convenience, though TfL ensures you will be able to get to your university quickly, wherever you live. The more central locations will likely be more pricey, so zones 3-4 are a more prudent choice for those on a budget. A typical trend for private accommodation is—the further away from Charing Cross, the cheaper—though you should not rely on this too strongly—many find cheap accommodation in the most expensive neighbourhoods! Famous for its social life, the city centre often seems like the only choice to spend your Friday night; while this is entirely true for clubs, theatres etc., wherever in the city you are, you will always have a friendly local pub or restaurant to share a meal, a drink and a laugh with a friend.

Settling in London is a fantastic adventure; a city so full of history, culture and good fun ensures you are never bored and always want more. You will not feel overwhelmed, though, as London often feels like a collection of pretty towns, rather than a gigantic metropolis it is.

Searching for accommodation, be it private halls or more traditional tenancies may seem a daunting task in a city as large as London, though with enough resolve and patience you will find an affordable property wherever you choose! Searching with studenthalls.co.uk will make the whole process easier and more pleasant!
