Student Halls Brighton
Dissimilarly to other university cities, Brighton’s private halls are not located in one or two particular areas, but are spread quite evenly along the A270 road which connects the Grand Parade (stretch of road from Brighton Pier to St Andrew’s Church) with the University of Sussex campus, located north-east of the city centre. There also is a fair number of halls built around the UoS campus in the Falmer neighbourhood—these are particularly suited to students who like to have a longer lie-in before the morning lectures. Living along A270 ensures that regardless of your uni you will be relatively close to the main campuses: a short cycle or bus-ride away! For those so inclined jogging to lectures is always an option, though the foot-traffic in the city centre may make the experience not that pleasant. Living in private halls will also likely give you the benefit of fantastic on-site amenities, such as free gym, cinema and games rooms etc. Prices of private halls vary—you will be sure to find something within your price-range, though be mindful that the newest and shiniest halls are likely to charge rent ca. £200+. Do not be dismayed, though—their fantastic location will ensure lower transport costs, while bills and WiFi costs are typically included in the rent.
Should you choose to settle in a privately-rented house or a flat, we recommend Hanover and Round Hill for ease of access to UoB, as well as Kemptown for those who wish to be as close to the waterfront as possible. These areas are the most popular with Brighton’s students, as they offer a good mix between semi-detached, detached and terraced houses. We typically recommend renting with a group of 4 or more friends as this lowers per-tenant costs and allows for greater flexibility when choosing the neighbourhood and property type. Make sure to remember to factor in bills and transport costs to the rent; it might just turn out that Brighton’s private halls are an easier and comparably priced option!
